Citadel football coaches are out on the road recruiting, as their tweets have made clear. But news about commitments has been hard to come by. This is what I can suss out thus far.
The Citadel got two early commitments during the season, from defensive Jake Smith (6-6, 225) of Greenville High School and running back Tyler Renew (6-1, 205) from Ben Lippen near Columbia.
Others known to be on the Bulldogs’ radar include offensive lineman Caleb Gee (6-2, 285) from Beaufort High School. Gee is scheduled to visit The Citadel this weekend, according to coach Mark Clifford, and also has interest from Newberry. Clifford also is trying to sell teams on senior running back Jaclay Mixon (5-8, 162), who ran for 1,700 yards and 22 touchdowns last season. Clifford says Mixon is good on his core courses and is working on a qualifying test score.
From Wando High School, wide receiver Rudder Brown (6-4, 195) has offers from Wofford and The Citadel, and has gotten late interest from Marshall. He’s likely to hold out for a while and see what mid-major offers might come in, said coach Jimmy Noonan.
Defensive lineman Jard Holloway (6-0, 275) of St. Paul’s in Mobile, Ala., reportedly has offers from Wofford, Southeastern Louisiana, Air Force, Army and the Citadel.
At Bishop England High School, running back DeAngelo Stephenson’s top choice is Northern Illinois, and he’s got offers from Newberry and Towson. The Citadel has shown interest but has not offered yet, coach John Cantey said.
Two players from perennial power Byrnes High School are apparently on The Citadel’s board — defensive back Shane Samuels (5-9, 170), who reportedly has offers from Western Carolina, App State and Elon, and offensive lineman Isaiah Pinson (6-2, 240), who is on the Shrine Bowl team and has offers from Western Carolina and Elon.
Defensive lineman Luke Felta (6-1, 230) has chosen Army over The Citadel, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian and Western Carolina, according to Rivals.com.
These prospects have been listed in various places as having interest from The Citadel, among other schools: OL Austin Turner (6-3, 290), Lexington; LB Kennan Gilchrist (6-3, 200), Abbeville; S Jamario Williams (6-1, 185), Hilton Head Christian; DL Devontay Moore (6-1, 275), Allendale-Fairfax.
Here’s a strange one. Yahoo Sports says The Citadel has offered DL Deadrin Senat (6-1, 311) of Immokalee, Fla. — along with USC, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, Florida International, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Kentucky, LSU, Miami, Ole Miss, Missouri, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Southern Cal and West Virginia, among others. Not much chance for the Dogs there, I’d venture.
Let me know what you are hearing.
