Samford’s 62-57 win over College of Charleston was just the Bulldogs’ third over a D-I team this season. They’ve also beaten Georgia Southern (57-48) and Tenn.-Martin (75-62). Samford parted ways with longtime coach Jimmy Tillette and hired Bennie Seltzer, a former assistant at Indiana. Samford is starting two freshmen and two sophomores, and 6-8 F Tim Williams from Chicago is a SoCon freshman of the year candidate with 14.9 ppg and 7.6 rpg. Samford no longer runs Tillette’s version of the Princeton offense, but is still a good 3-point shooting team (35.2% against D-I teams, No. 104 in the country), but has struggled on defense, ranking near the bottom of D-I in most categories. Samford also is the worst rebounding team in the SoCon, so that should present some opportunities for Mike Groselle and Stephen Elmore. The Citadel beat Samford by 73-62 last year behind 25 points from Groselle. Samford has played a fairly difficult schedule, with five games against teams in the top 100 of the RPI, with games at Louisville, Memphis, Kentucky and Wisconsin. predicts a 71-65 win for Samford, with a 30 percent chance of a Citadel victory.
