Georgia Southern at The Citadel
WHEN: 7:05 p.m. Thursday. WHERE: McAlister Field House
RECORDS: GSU 10-15, 4-8 SoCon; Citadel 6-17, 3-10
NOTES: After winning two straight, the Bulldogs have now lost two in a row, both on the road, by 89-76 at Chattanooga and 79-67 at Samford … In those two games, Citadel foes combined to shoot 58 percent from the floor and 42 percent from 3-point range, while the Bulldogs had 35 turnovers … The Citadel scored its first SoCon win of the season at GSU on Jan. 19, shooting 60 percent in a 70-55 victory … Since beating Davidson and College of Charleston in back-to-back games, GSU has lost five of seven, two of the losses in overtime to Appalachian State … Eagles F Eric Ferguson is averaging 14.3 points and 6.8 rebounds.
After the last two games, The Citadel now ranks No. 346 out of 347 D-I teams in defensive efficiency at kenpom.com, giving up 1.19 points per possession. That’s ahead of only 0-22 Grambling State. The Bulldogs are No. 337 in turnover rate (24.8%), meaning the two problems that have plagued The Citadel from the start of the season — defense and turnovers — have not gotten any better over the course of the season. That’s a shame, because the Dogs’ offensive numbers actually are not bad — they rank in the top 105 in the nation in effective FG%, 2PT FG%, 3PT FG% and FT%. The Citadel leads the SoCon in shooting percentage (45.4) but is trying a league-worst 49 shots per game, due to their turnover issues. Kenpom.com predicts a 66-65 win for GSU, with a 47 percent chance of a Citadel win. Of the Bulldogs’ six remaining games, that’s their best shot at a win except for the Feb. 28 home game with Furman (60%).
