One Citadel fan (that’s you, @SandlapperSpike) has dubbed it Uni-gate. The Bulldogs had planned to wear their throwback uniforms, pictured above, in Saturday’s game against Furman.

The unis are provided by adidas, and feature a large block letter and a small number on the front of the jersey, and a large number on the back. They look just like throwback jerseys worn this season by Michigan and Wisconsin, pictured below.

Citadel officials say they had approval from the SoCon to wear the throwback uniforms against Furman. But apparently, word did not reach the game officials. They forced the Bulldogs to change into their regular uniforms just before kickoff, or face a penalty for wearing an illegal uniform (the numbers on the front are not large enough).

Citadel athletic directory Larry Leckonby said Monday that the school is seeking clarification from the SoCon, and that the Bulldogs will try again to wear the throwback uniforms during a game later this season. The game-worn uniforms are to be auctioned off by the Citadel Brigadier Foundation.
