What to know about Samford: Samford coach Pat Sullivan won the Heisman Trophy in 1971 as Auburn’s quarterback. Bobby Bowden is a 1953 graduate and coached Samford from 1959-62, when it was known as Howard College. Located in Homewood, Ala. (outside Birmingham), Samford has 2,882 undergrads and joined the SoCon in 2008. It’s a private school affiliated with the Alabama Baptist Convention. Terry Bowden went 12-2
as Samford’s coach in 1991. Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher still holds school records for points in a game (36) and season (244). Alumni include NFL cornerback Cortland Finnegan, former Alabama Gov. Jim Folsom, two Miss Alabamas and a Miss America, and two members of Little Big Town.
Citadel coaches are worried about: Everything. Samford has the SoCon’s top passer (Andy Summerlin), No. 8 rusher and top kick returner (Fabian Truss), No. 5 receiver (Kelsey Pope), No. 1 tackler, sacker and TFL’er (LB Justin Shade) and All-America safety Jaquiski Tartt.
Emotional edge: Samford could be due for a fall-off after last week’s showdown with Wofford, a 34-27 victory, and is playing the third of four straight SoCon road games. It’s Homecoming for The Citadel, but not sure what these Bulldogs will have in the tank after giving Chattanooga its best shot — and losing — last week.
Video evidence: Samford gave Arkansas a hard time in a 31-21 loss on Sept. 7
