Catching up with Craig Candeto

Craig Candeto

The name of Craig Candeto has been on the minds of Citadel fans since Monday, when football coach Kevin Higgins announced his departure for Wake Forest.

Candeto is the former Navy QB and fighter pilot who served as QB coach at The Citadel for two years, helping the Bulldogs to a 7-4 record in 2012. Here’s a feature I wrote on Craig in 2011.

Candeto left The Citadel to become head coach at Division III Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Playing in a tough league that includes D-III powers John Carroll, Heidelberg and Mount Union, Capital went 3-7 with a roster that included 43 freshmen, a one-game improvement over last year.

“Anytime your name is mentioned with a job like The Citadel, it’s flattering,” Candeto said Tuesday. “I don’t want to say yes or no as to my interest because I’ve only been here one year, but it’s very flattering to be mentioned.

“I think Kevin Higgins did a great job stabilizing the program, and I hope they find the right guy. I want the guys there to have success. I’m still in touch with guys like Ben Dupree, Aaron Miller and Darien Robinson.

“I certainly have a lot of ties there and The Citadel is a great place. At the same time, I’m happy here and I think we are building a good program here.”

Translation, in my opinion — Craig would be interested if The Citadel is interested, but after one season at Capital doesn’t want to be seen as campaigning for the job.

  1. Jeff,
Great article about Higgins and the search for a new Coach
at The Citadel. Your are correct, Higgins certainly left the program
in better shape than it was when he came. As an Alum, I apprciate
your thoughts and concerns about hiring the right Coach. As you
said Leconby better get the right man. Coach Higgins certainly
gave it his all and left his mark on the whole community. My hope
    for him is the best.
Thanks for your thoughts and keep us posted, I’ am pulling for
Candeto, and will let Leconby know my vote.

  2. He would be a good choice but I agree that he seems committed to what he started at Capital Univ.

Why no mention of Stump Mitchell or isn’t he interested anymore?
