College of Charleston’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams head to the University of Georgia for this weekend’s 2013 CCSA Championships.

The Cougar men’s team will look to defend its 2012 championship title, while the women will aim to improve on last season’s seventh place finish and program-best 267 points. The men’s team also won the championship in 2008 and 2009.

Less than 400 tickets remain for the College of Charleston’s showdown against Davidson Thursday night at TD Arena.

The Cougars (18-7 overall, 10-3 in the Southern Conference) have won six straight and eight of their last 10 games, while the Wildcats (17-7, 12-1) have won eight consecutive games.

College of Charleston senior right-handed pitcher Matt Pegler was selected Preseason Pitcher of the Year by a poll of the Southern Conference coaches, the conference office announced Thursday afternoon.

College of Charleston was picked to finish first in the conference in a poll of the league’s media, while the SoCon coaches selected the Cougars third in the league, just a vote behind second-place Western Carolina. The coaches voted Elon to win the league in 2013.

College of Charleston freshman sailor Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) has been selected to sail for the U.S. at the first-ever Red Bull Youth America’s Cup to be held in August on San Francisco Bay in San Francisco, Calif.

Reynolds, who sailed previously for the San Diego Yacht Club prior to his enrollment at CofC, met with members of Oracle Team USA last summer at the 2012 Governor’s Cup regatta in Newport Beach, Calif. He endured rigorous testing on windy, unpredictable San Francisco Bay to earn the honor of representing his country against teams from all over the world in the sport’s top event.

Consider who the College of Charleston has faced in the past in the BracketBuster games, this is a major letdown.

The Cougars will take on Big South opponent, Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Feb. 23 at TD Arena.

This game won’t help the Cougars cause in getting their RPI ranking any higher. They’ve got 16 wins over Division I teams and are ranked No. 156, according to ESPN. Shawn Ferguson, Sean de Silva and Ralphie Lundy, members of the College of Charleston men’s soccer team, were all invited to the United Soccer Leagues (USL) PRO Combine to be held in Bradenton, Fla., beginning Friday and runs through Sunday.

The USL PRO Combine provides an opportunity for elite men’s soccer players to showcase their talents for both domestic and international scouts and professional coaches.

“We’re very proud of these three players,” said CofC head coach Ralph Lundy. “All three of them have brilliant futures and potential to play professional soccer. This is a testament to that, and a super opportunity for it to come true. They’re going to be seen by some of the best coaches at this wonderful event.”

The annual event, now in its seventh year, has served as a highly effective springboard to the professional ranks and provides these three players with a bright prospect of landing professional contracts. Last year, 10 of the combine’s participants went on to sign professional contracts with USL, Major League Soccer (MLS) and international squads, propelling the six-year total upwards of 150.

CofC’s standouts were three of 102 players selected from across the globe who now have the opportunity to prove their worth at the next level. The USL PRO Combine, led by USL National Technical Director Peter Mellor, will provide a comprehensive curriculum that challenges participants while providing coaches with the proper environment for evaluation.  Coaches expected to participate in the event will include MLS staff coaches and several current PDL head coaches.

Ferguson (Rock Hill, S.C.) was a rock at central defense for the Cougars and started every single match of his career up until suffering a broken bone in his face in a match midway through his senior campaign. He battled back from that injury and against the odds got back on the field for CofC’s final three games, averaging 89 minutes between those contests. The 6-3 defender always had his backline organized and used his frame well for clearing out set pieces and services. Despite his defensive focus, Ferguson netted five goals throughout his career and tallied four assists.

De Silva (Port of Spain, Trinidad) was a constant contributor and an integral component to CofC’s attack. The midfielder demonstrated tremendous skill and speed both on and off the ball. He demonstrated a knack for getting behind the defense and capitalized with a tremendous finishing touch and ability. Throughout his career, de Silva found the net 20 times for the Cougars while registering 19 assists after placing team highs in both categories his senior season. He was a three-time all-Southern Conference first-team selection during his career with the Cougars.

Lundy (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) always displayed a tremendous ball-striking ability and could both score and serve balls from distance, both from set pieces and the run of play. He is an inventive player who possessed creativity and field vision in the attacking third of the field which contributed to his seven goals and 17 assists as a Cougar.

Senior diver Peter Gibbons  was named CCSA Diver of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

Gibbons bested his own school records this past Saturday in a dual meet win over Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD). He posted impressive first-place scores of 321.75 in the one-meter dive and a 287.10 in the three-meter dive.

A biology major, Gibbons is the first CofC male diver to qualify for the NCAA Regional Zones meet, and his scores continue to be the best in the CCSA.

This weekly honor marks his third such award this season and 13th weekly award in his career. The Cougars have won the CCSA Male Diver of the Week award in four out of the five weeks that CofC has competed this season
