Cougars to face Gardner-Webb in ESPN BracketBuster

Consider who the College of Charleston has faced in the past in the BracketBuster games, this is a major letdown.

The Cougars will take on Big South opponent, Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Feb. 23 at TD Arena.

This game won’t help the Cougars cause in getting their RPI ranking any higher. They’ve got 16 wins over Division I teams and are ranked No. 156, according to ESPN. It’s like they can’t win for losing. Or maybe that’s the other way around.

You can see why the Cougars were eager to leave the SoCon, but is the CAA really that much better. If they had the identical conference mark, would they be that much higher?

Here’s a release from the CofC on the game. Game time has yet to be announced.

The College of Charleston men’s basketball team will play host to Gardner-Webb in the 2013 Ramada Worldwide ESPN BracketBusters event on Saturday, Feb. 23, at a time still to be determined at TD Arena.

The Cougars lead 1-0 in the all-time series with the Runnin’ Bulldogs and last faced the Big South Conference school in 2000 (W, 81-63) under legendary head coach John Kresse at John Kresse Arena.

CofC is 5-1 all-time in BracketBuster games and has won its last five-straight appearances in the event. Last season, the Cougars defeated Kent State, 80-73, on Feb. 18, 2012 in Kent, Ohio. CofC’s four other BracketBusters wins came against VCU in 2005, Georgia State in 2006, George Mason in 2010 and Vermont in 2011.

The 11th annual BracketBusters, a two-day men’s college basketball event, pits potential NCAA Championship hopefuls selected from a pool of 122 teams from 15 conferences against each other on Feb. 22 & 23, three weeks before Selection Sunday.

As part of the agreement, all 13 of the BracketBusters home teams in televised games, as well as the remaining 58 home squads, will play a return game at the home facility of their opponent in November or December of the 2013-14 season.

BracketBusters is part of ESPN’s college basketball franchise programming, along with Feast Week presented by Lowe’s, Holiday Hoops Presented by Kay Jewelers, Rivalry Week, Bracket Builder Week and Championship Week Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

Teams participating this season in BracketBusters have produced 101 appearances in the last seven NCAA Championships. For more information, please log onto:

  1. “is the CAA really that much better?”
According to Jeff Sagarin, at least kinda. Using the top 200 teams in his ranking as a cutoff (Mendoza line?) the CAA has 6, the SoCon has 3, with one leaving this summer.

    • I see the move to the CAA being more of a lateral move than an upward move. If the CAA still had VCU and George Mason was what they were a few years back, then, yes, it’s a significant move up.
      Now, not so much.
But the SoCon really is a weak hoop league.
