22nd Reindeer Run is Saturday; late registration and packet pick-up today at Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory

The second of what I’ve long considered the triple crown of Charleston’s running year-end finale comes Saturday with the 22nd annual Reindeer Run, which starts at 9 a.m. in front of Southend Brewery on East Bay Street.

  • Every participant in the annual Reindeer Run gets a pair of antlers to wear. Of course, donning them is optional. Every participant in the annual Reindeer Run gets a pair of antlers to wear. Of course, donning them is optional.

Sandwiched between the Turkey Day Run on Thanksgiving and the Kiawah Island Marathon and Half Marathon on the second Saturday of December, both of which celebrate 35th anniversaries this year, the Reindeer Run is the most festive.

Though prize money isn’t significant enough to draw super-fast Kenyans and Russians out of the woodwork, this event is all about the holiday season, from the costumes and music to snowmaking machines periodically shooting snowflakes on participants from the Vendue Inn.

The Reindeer Run, presented by Piggly Wiggly and Half-Moon Outfitters, is organized by the Charitable Society of Charleston as a fundraiser for the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital. Last year, the society raised $71,000 for the hospital from the event.

Necessary changes

Society member and race director Cameron Widman said the event will have its usual festivities, including holiday costume contests and live music, but will add an outdoor beer garden on a closed-off Queen Street next to the brewery.

The large crowd inside Southend following the race led to the addition of the garden, Widman said.

Widman also wanted to remind people that late registration and packet pickup 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday has been moved to the Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory at U.S. Highway 17 and Mathis Ferry Road. For years, it was held at the Gailliard Auditorium, which is under renovation.

As of late last week, Widman said the society was running about 100 registrants ahead of last year’s numbers and that she’s hoping for between 3,200 and 3,500 sign-ups.

35th Turkey Day Run is poised to set another registration record; online registration closed 921 above last year’s YTD record-breaking year

Despite the Seattle-like weather the past half week, the 35th Turkey Day Run in Charleston is well on its way to setting a registration record – and if the weather returns to normal, ie Charleston weather – that bodes well for a record participation number.

When online registration closed on Sunday, it was at 4,085 – or 921 MORE than last year’s YTD number, according to TDR’s Caroline Morris.

Chuck Magera added that including mail-in and kids run (243), the TOTAL as of Sunday evening is 4,673.

Last year’s race set two records with 6,052 registrants and 5,554 participants. That made Turkey Day the 28th largest 5K in the United States.

“I think we’ll hit somewhere between 6,500 and 6,700,” says Magera, who has worked with TDR for 30 years. “In the past three years, we’ve gotten about 2,000 people signing up in the days leading up to the race.” (2011: it went from 4,037 to 6,052; 2010, 3,999 to 5,887; 2009, 3,201 to 5,138).

And the weather, as all the TDR folks are pointing out, looks good for Wednesday and Thursday.

Thankfully, the race will start in waves FOR THE FIRST TIME with “serious runners” (expected finish of 25 minutes or faster) start at 9 a.m., “joggers” (25-49 minutes) at 9:03 a.m. and walkers and those with strollers at 9:06 a.m. I hope all will cooperate!

Meanwhile, PLEASE NOTE that in-person registration and packet pick-up is only on Wednesday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and on Thursday, 7-8:45 a.m. Cost is $35 on Wednesday and $40 on Thursday.

Some post-race stuff includes music by Blue Dogs, beer by Michelob, climbing wall by Charleston County PRC, “donut dunking station” by Krispy Kreme and the Charleston Photo Bus by Charleston Party Booth.
