Awendaw Passage 14K trail run is Saturday – here are some details

A few announcements and updates for race week from race director, Dr. Adam Allie:

- Packet Pickup will be Friday June 21 at FleetFeet Sports in Mt Pleasant from 4-7pm.  Since there is looking to be close to 200-300 runners, it would be most ideal for all runners to try to make it to packet pickup, so to avoid race morning congestion, lines, and stress.  Come get your official race shirt and packet/swag on Friday night.

- Race morning parking will be dialed in and smooth.  We will be having a team of volunteers to guide you where to park at Buck Hall.  There will be a large parking field we will be using at Buck Hall.  Per National Forest permitting and rules, each car will need to pay $5.  There is no way of getting around this, and all money of course goes to the National Forest Service, for upkeep etc.  We will be stationing a race volunteer at the park entrance to simply collect $5 from each car upon arriving.  This will make everything much smooth and more efficient.  Then you will be guided to a parking space.

Please come with $5 ready.  Thank you.  For people who want to avoid the $5 and to avoid the congestion, SeeWeeOupost on Hwy 17 has agreed to allow our racers to park for free and carpool to Buck Hall. Buck Hall is 12.4 miles from SeeWee Outpost.

- Spectators, family, and friends can meet and cheer on their runners of course at the start/finish, as well as a few other places on course.  At the far end of the parking field, there is a small connector trail that connects to the race course – a wonderful spot to cheer on runners very close to the start and finish.  Also at the midway turnaround point at The Awendaw Canoe Launch, spectators can meet and cheer on their runners.  There is free parking available there, but only about 20 spaces.  If this fills, you may park along the dirt road leading to the Canoe Launch.  The canoe launch is a mere 2.1 miles down Hwy 17 from the start/finish line, so it makes for a very ideal place to meet/crew your runners at the midway point.

- There will be 2 fully stocked, manned Aid Stations.  The first and last Aid Station will come at mile 1.2 outbound and approx mile 7.2 inbound.  It will be manned by FleetFeet Sports.  And at the midway point, there will be the largest Aid Station on the course, fully stocked with water, Gatorade, Gu Gels, popsicles, bananas, oranges, pretzels, M&Ms, fig newtons, ice, and StingerWaffles. There will also be first aid and portable toilets at the midway (as well as at the start/finish).  Please thank all volunteers on course – they are there to help you make it to the finish line!

- The course will be very well marked with Pink/Black ribbons, orange spray paint arrows at various turns, as well as the ever-present large white blazes of The Palmetto Trail.  There will be no getting lost on this course.

- This could possibly be a very hot race.  Please make sure to bring and drink plenty of water and fluids.  Drink early and often.  Also be sure to apply sunscreen and bugspray.  We want this race to be fun and perfect for you – not miserable.

- If it rains, then it rains.  We cannot control the weather.  Of course we’d prefer sunny, but we may not be so lucky.  If it rains, bring appropriate gear, and it will be that much more fun!

- At the finish line, there will be 2 massage therapists ready to give all finishers a post-race massage.  There will also be first aid.  Chick FilA will be serving chicken sandwiches, fruit, and tea to all runners at the finish.  There will also be bananas and bottled water at the immediate finish, provided by Trader Joes.  The post race Raffle and Awards Ceremony will be held at 10:30 at the Buck Hall Gazebo, at the finish line.  All award winners must be present at the Ceremony to claim their prizes – which will be sweet!  All runners will also get a complimentary raffle ticket as part of their race swag packet.  The raffle prizes will be sweet as well!  Runners and family will also be able to purchase more raffle tickets on race day prior to the raffle at the finish line/Gazebo.

- Age group awards have changed slightly, due to the registrants.  We will no longer be awarding under 20yo awards, as the numbers of registrants is so few in this age group, and the number of veteran runners is so high (which is wonderful!).  We will be having awards for Overall Top 5 Male and Female, Top Masters Male and Female (over 40) and GrandMasters Top Male and Female (over 50).  No other age group awards will be awarded.  Race awards will be valuable and will include the following: Free Weekend at Wild Dunes, Massage and Facial from Earthling Day Spa, Sports Massage from ProActiv, Dinner at Dunes West, Tilley UPF 50 hats (retail $80), and Giftcards to The Backpacker.  Hopefully there will also be unique handmade awards.  Also, all race award winners will be receiving free automatic entry into the 2014 AP14K.

- Professional photography will be at multiple spots on the course, and you will be able to purchase your photos in the days after the race.  There will be info on this in your race packets, as well as post-race emails.  So Smile!

- Disposable bib chip timing will be used.  Please place your bibs on the front of your shirt, or plainly visible on your shorts.

Please bring your friends, post an announcement on Facebook, and invite your running and outdoor buddies.  They can still register at Packet Pickup and on race morning, up until 7:30.  This will be a very special race.  The trail is truly amazing and the scenery is spectacular.  Its tough enough to challenge elite trail runners, and yet a perfect first time trail race for road runners and hikers!  We have put lots of energy, thought, time, and passion into this race, and we all feel it will be evident on race day.  We cannot wait – it’s finally race week!  See you very soon!
