I asked Chad Haffa for an update on the Sept. 7 Francis Marion Dirt Dash, which is becoming an early fall running tradition in Charleston:
I have about 180 registered so far, I am pretty happy with that. I have one lady from Brooklyn, 1 guy from Colorado and another lady from Montana coming to town for the race. I have a husband and wife team that is coming for the 4th year in a row to run. They are from Massachusetts.
This year, all proceeds from the 5k will go to the fund set up to help the 19 Arizona Hotshots that died earlier this year in a wildfire.
As you know, I have GU Energy as the endurance supplement sponsor, Trysports and Matt Dillard Oral and Facial Surgery as presenting sponsors, Lightning Bugz LSV will transport people to the start and new company Charleston Ventures will transport people from the Sewee Visitors Center to I’on Swamp Road. Piggly Wiggly returns as a sponsor to provide water and fruit.
The event is once again a Trail Runner Magazine Trophy Series Event. People earn points for competing in trophy series events, I compile the info on the runners and submit it to Trail Runner Magazine and they keep track of individual results.
The Army National Guard from the Florence area is doing a ruck march in respect to the Wounded Warrior Project. They are supposed to be in full gear with their ruck packs carrying the flag. Hopefully I can get someone out there to sing the National Anthem prior to the start.
All participants will get a technical fabric shirt and half marathon finishers will get a cool finisher medal. Afterwards we are all gathering at Mellow Mushroom in Mount Pleasant for some beer and pizza.
Other than that.. business as usual! I love doing this… and love getting people from all over the country to run through the woods.
******* Details on the race *******
The 4th Annual Francis Marion Dirt Dash Half Marathon and 12k/5k (7.5 and 3.4 mile) run takes place in the Francis Marion National Forest. Participants will gather at the Sewee Visitors Center prior to entering the forest. Once in the forest, participants will be corralled based on the event that they are participating in. Half Marathon and 12k participants will start at 7:00AM followed by the 5k participants.
The 5k route is 3.4 miles long. This is due to the logistics of starting three races at the same point. I hope you don’t mind getting a little bit more running in!
A portion of the proceeds from the Half Marathon help support the Mount Pleasant Fire Department’s Wildland Firefighting Program. A portion of the proceeds from the 12k event will be donated to the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center for cancer research in honor of Renee’ Thomas.
The Francis Marion Dirt Dash 5k, will be used to raise funds for the Granite Mountain Hotshots. 19 of 20 guys died in what was no doubt, a horrible death on June 30th. ALL PROCEEDS from the 5k will go to the families of the Granite Mountain Hotshots.
