I caught up with Stingrays head coach Spencer Carbery this afternoon and there was no good news for Stingrays Nation.
Suffice to say that the Rays are still hurting literally from this past weekend. It appears that both Chris Langkow and defenseman Damon Kipp are out for the weekend with various injuries.
All the other injured guys, Mike Hamilton, Ryan Lowery, Tyler Johnson and Andrew Sackrison are also not expected to play this weekend.
Also, the Rays picked up the rights to Jon Awe, the former Gwinnett All-Star, on waivers. Rumors around the league are that the Gwinnett coaching staff and front office were not thrilled by this. Carbery said he’s trying to lure Awe to the Lowcountry. He certainly would help the Rays’ power play.
The Rays signed SPHL forward Brian Elser. My understanding that this Elser won’t be the only SPHL player the Rays acquire for the weekend.
Currently in his first professional season, Elser, 23, skated in 29 games with the Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League netting 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points. The Hopewell Junction, New York, native appeared in one ECHL contest this season with the Gwinnett Gladiators adding no points. Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot, 190-pound forward attended Manhattanville College for two seasons totaling 32 points (19 goals, 13 assists) in 47 games.
I’ll have a feature on Rays forward Hunter Bishop for Friday.
