Matt Beca recalled to Charlotte

The revolving door that has been the South Carolina Stingrays roster continued today as winger Matt Beca was called up to the American Hockey League’s Charlotte Checkers today.

Beca has been outstanding since joining the Rays on New Year’s Eve and you could tell he played with an edge last night against his former team.

As you’ll recall, no pun intended, the Rays received D-men Tommy Cross and Ryan Button for last night’s game with Florida. Cross, was well, Cross. He’s a kid that gets it and has something invested.

After the game, Rays head coach Spencer Carberry wasn’t very pleased with Cross’ performance, but it was certainly better than Button, who looked uninterested in the little ice time he had before getting injured in the first period.

Cross and Button will remain with the Rays through the weekend, which includes three games in Orlando.

If the Rays can take 2 of 3 from the Solar Bears this weekend, the chances of them making the playoffs are pretty good. Anything less than four points and it’s going to be a struggle.

Of the 19 games left on the schedule, 11 of them come against Greenville or Gwinnett, the two top teams in the ECHL’s South Division.
