South Carolina Stingrays release 2013-14 schedule

The South Carolina Stingrays released their schedule for the 2013-14 season on Wednesday.

It’s too bad we won’t see a team from out West come to the North Charleston Coliseum again like we did last season when Ontario visited. I think a West team should travel East at least once a year and vice-versa. I know it’s expensive, but come on, once every three of four years a team can afford it.

The Stingrays certainly will see Greenville enough — 17 times to be exact — by the 13th times it gets boring.

The one thing that jumped out at me was the season was extended by a week or two. The Stingrays will end their season on April 11 against Elmira at home. That’s a good 10-to-11 days later than last season.

When I talked with Rays President Rob Concannon he said the ECHL moved their schedule to be more in line with the AHL and NHL schedules, which is something they should have done years ago. It also opens up another weekend and crowds are better on the weekends.

I think 29 of the 36 home games are on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday. The Rays also have just one of those home weekends where they play Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It seemed like they had five or six of those last year and by Sunday, it’s a tough sale — that’s three games in less than three days and the players, fans, reporters and broadcasters are tired of hockey.

Joey Z does his typical outstanding job of breaking down the schedule.
