When do you know that you have a deep team – when you’re third line forward is named the ECHL Player of the Week.
Stingrays forward Marc Hagel was named the ECHL Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Hagel, 25, recorded three goals and two assists for five points in three games last week as the Stingrays went 2-0-1-0 and extended their ECHL-best season-opening unbeaten streak to 9-0-1-1. The Hamilton, Ontario, native scored two goals Thursday night including the game-winning tally in the team’s 4-2 win at Greenville, added a goal in a 3-2 overtime loss against Evansville Friday at the North Charleston Coliseum and wrapped up the week with two assists in a 6-5 shootout victory over Evansville Saturday in North Charleston.
Currently in his first professional season, Hagel is second among ECHL rookies with six goals and fourth among first-year players with nine points (six goals, three assists). The 6-foot, 196-pound forward is also fourth among rookies in plus-minus at +7. Prior to turning pro, Hagel scored 34 points (17 goals, 17 assists) in 92 games at Princeton University from 2008-12 and spent last season with Miami University picking up 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) in 42 games. He made his pro debut at the end of last season acquiring two assists in six games with the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League.
