Justin Maylan headed to Europe; Scouting the Everblades

I guess the biggest news coming out of the Stingrays Friday is that center Justin Maylan has left the team to go play in Europe.

Justin Maylan

Justin Maylan with Oklahoma Barons in AHL earlier this year.

I know this blindsided Rays head coach Spencer Carbery. Don’t understand Maylan’s thinking here. He already has been called up to the AHL once and more call-ups were likely if he produced at this level, especially with the Rays playing the way they are right now.

Carbery hinted that he has a free agent or two out there that he’s thinking about signing in place of Maylan.

Also, back-up goalie Adam Morrison is out. He has a lower body injury and won’t be able to play this weekend or on Tuesday. Carbery said he’ll sign another goalie.

So a couple of quick injury updates. … team captain Kevin Quick broke his leg a week ago against Greenville, will be out of the lineup for at least three months and is not expected to be back on the ice until February. Forwards Jack Downing (upper body) and Igor Gongalsky (upper body) have missed the last two games and are not expected to play against the Everblades. There’s a chance that Downing could play Sunday against Gwinnett. He is further along than Gongalsky. There’s a good chance both of them will return by Tuesday night.

Here’s the game story from Everblades loss to Gwinnett on Thursday night from the Naples Morning News.

Here’s preview capsule of the game with the Stingrays.

Matthew Pistilli

Matt Pistilli, a former Stingray, is second in ECHL in scoring with 21 points.

Brandon MacLean is fifth in the ECHL in scoring with 15 points.

Notes: The Everblades feature one of the top scorers in the ECHL – winger Matthew Pistilli, who is second going into the weekend with 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points. Pistilli played for the Stingrays a year ago and had 23 points (8 goals, 15 assists in 35 games) before being traded for Matt Beca. … In case you were wondering, Beca is playing Germany. … Forward Brandon MacLean is tied for fourth in the league in scoring with seven goals and eight assists for 15 points. … Trevor Bruess, another former Stingray, has two assists in six games for the Everblades.

  1. Florida also leads the league with 5 SHG; 3 came in 1 game against Elmira. I was happy to see Pistilli leave because he appeared to be dogging it down the ice most of the time. His game was always 100 feet not 200 feet…
