House committee assignments complete

House Speaker Bobby Harrell’s office today released a full list of committee appointments. The appointments follow the Tuesday election of a pair of committees. Haley: moderate turn not the answer for GOP

The Heritage Foundation has released video of Gov. Nikki Haley’s appearance at a foundation event in Chicago last week. In her speech, Haley said the lesson to take from President Barack Obama’s lopsided victory over Mitt Romney isn’t that the GOP should moderate itself. Instead, the party needs to stand on principle and do a better job of drawing contrasts, she said.

Haley also spends a few minutes recounting her push for on-the-record voting while still in the Legislature, and hits several of her familiar national speech themes.

Lee Bright preparing for possible run against Lindsey Graham

State Sen. Lee Bright, R-Spartanburg, confirmed Monday that he’s had talks with fundraisers about a possible GOP primary challenge against U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Graham has been pegged by the Club for Growth and others as a potential vulnerable primary target in 2014.

Much of the speculation about a possible challenger from the right of Graham has centered on state Sen. Tom Davis, a Beaufort Republican who served as former GOP Gov. Mark Sanford’s chief of staff.

Bright, a member of the state Senate’s “William Wallace Caucus” like Davis, said he’s focused on his service in South Carolina for the time being after being re-elected in November, but left open the possibility of a run against Graham.

Sheheen in Los Angeles for Democratic Governors Association meetings

In another sign that he could be preparing for a rematch against Gov. Nikki Haley, state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, D-Camden, is in Los Angeles this week for the Democratic Governors Association annual meetings.

Sheheen, who narrowly lost to Haley in 2010, said the group invited him to attend. Asked if his attendance means he is readying to run against Haley, Sheheen said it’s merely a sign that others are interested in seeing him challenge the first-term Republican. Sheheen reiterated that he’ll make a decision on whether to run in the coming months.

Sheeheen met privately with a collection of Democratic governors during September’s Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, saying he wanted to learn about challenges in their states.
