Sheheen in Los Angeles for Democratic Governors Association meetings

In another sign that he could be preparing for a rematch against Gov. Nikki Haley, state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, D-Camden, is in Los Angeles this week for the Democratic Governors Association annual meetings.

Sheheen, who narrowly lost to Haley in 2010, said the group invited him to attend. Asked if his attendance means he is readying to run against Haley, Sheheen said it’s merely a sign that others are interested in seeing him challenge the first-term Republican. Sheheen reiterated that he’ll make a decision on whether to run in the coming months.

Sheeheen met privately with a collection of Democratic governors during September’s Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, saying he wanted to learn about challenges in their states.

New Haley approval numbers coming this week

For the first time in more than seven months, new poll numbers gauging Gov. Nikki Haley’s job approval are coming. A new Winthrop Poll will be released Wednesday, and it will include Haley approval numbers broken down by general population, registered voters and voters who voted in the most recent presidential election.

The results will give some indication how a massive breach of taxpayer data at the S.C. Department of Revenue has affected voters’ opinions of Haley heading into the 2014 gubernatorial election. The State newspaper will have exclusive access next week to additional polling data because of an agreement dating back to the beginning of the poll.

April’s Winthrop Poll, the last to include Haley approval numbers, offered mixed results for the Republican governor. Additional polling measuring where Haley stands could be coming soon from Raleigh-based Public Policy Polling, which is conducting gubernatorial polling.

Haley taking first out-of-state trip since breach announced

COLUMBIA — Gov. Nikki Haley is making her first out-of-state political appearance this week since her administration announced a cyber breach affecting millions of South Carolina taxpayers.

At noon on Tuesday, Haley is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at Heritage Foundation luncheon in Chicago. The foundation is a conservative think tank. The agenda for the gathering doesn’t list a topic for Haley’s speech, but a preceding panel discussion will be focused on policy priorities following the election. The Chicago trip is actually the second out-of-state journey Haley has taken since she knew about the massive breach at the S.C. Department of Revenue.

The Secret Service alerted state officials to the breach on Oct. 10. Haley attended a Republican Governors Association retreat from Oct. 19-21 in Napa, Calif. Her administration publicly announced the breach on Oct. 26. The governor has said the timing of the announcement was dependent on clearance from law enforcement.

Chicago won’t be Haley’s only stop this week. On Wednesday morning, she’ll be a guest speaker at an RGA breakfast. Later that morning, the governor will meet with members of the S.C. congressional delegation. Last week, Haley said she intended to talk with the delegation about strengthening Internal Revenue Service policies that would require states to encrypt Social Security numbers. The governor blamed the breach in part on the lack of that requirement.

Haley will have the chance to start that discussion Tuesday, according to her spokesman Rob Godfrey. Godfrey said Haley and the delegation will discuss cyber security strengthening the state’s ports, illegal immigration reform and economic development projects “she needs their help on.” Godfrey said Haley will not hold a fundraiser as part of the out-of-state swing.
