Charleston Veteran’s Day Parade is Saturday

Charleston’s Veterans Day parade will be held downtown on Saturday afternoon.

Police officials stress interruptions to traffic won’t be long term and that cars will not have to be off the streets or out of parking spaces during the event.

The parade will begin at 3:30 p.m., kicked off by the playing of the National Anthem and a fly-over from a C-17 aircraft.

Charleston police Lt. Jason Emanuele say that some parking spaces will be blocked off ahead of time but not all cars will have to be removed from the parade route.

The parade will last about 90 minutes, with city streets opening again once the last group in the march has passed by.

All streets should be cleared by 5:30 p.m.

The parade is sponsored by the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and will feature historic military vehicles, motorcycle groups, veterans service organization floats and more.

Grand marshal is Capt. Kenney-Gutshall, commanding officer of Naval Health Clinic Charleston.

The parade begins at 3:30 p.m. and travels from Concord and Market streets, west on Market to East Bay Street, then East Bay to Broad Street, then from Broad Street ending at Colonial Lake.

Other events:

Monday – The City of North Charleston will host its annual Veterans Day tribute from 10:30 am – 1 pm at Park Circle. All veterans in attendance will be recognized and will receive a specially designed commemorative coin.

Lt. Col. Vernon F. Lightner will be the event’s keynote speaker. He has served in a variety of leadership positions from platoon leader to battalion commander, most recently serving as the Director of Emergency Services at Fort Bliss, Tex.

Prior to the ceremony, from 9:30 am – 10:30 am, a story swap will be held in the Felix Davis Community Center. Veterans will have an open opportunity to share memories and stories about their service with fellow veterans. The story swap is open to the public. Patriots Point – The 2012 Carrier Classic Friday will transform the carrier Yorktown into a basketball area Friday meaning the museum will be closed to the public for day visitation Nov. 9. The museum will be open to the public Thursday; however, the flight deck will be closed as final preparations are made. For members of the public who may wish to visit Thursday, Patriots Point will offer discounted tickets.

On Monday Patriots Point will offer free admission for all veterans and their families all day. $5 per vehicle parking fee will still apply.

Additionally: Various other park and area visitation sites are dropping entrance fees for veterans in the days ahead.

In addition, some restaurants are offering free meals for veterans who show proof of military service.

How to make your own affordable Halloween costume

One of the leading coupon code websites in the US, CouponCodes4u.com, shares tips for crafting the best Halloween costume without spending a fortune.

Making or buying the spookiest, cutest or sexiest Halloween costume doesn’t have to break the bank. Some of the most creative and prize-winning costumes are homemade or created from a few inexpensive items, so the money savers at CouponCodes4u.com have put together tips for assembling a costume that will scare your neighbors without draining your bank account.

Makeup artistry
One of the most inexpensive ways to make a costume compelling without spending a ton of cash takes some artistic work – makeup. Costume makeup, and especially old eyeliners, shadows and blushes you already have lying around, can add pop to any costume at a low cost. Party stores and drug stores sell lower-end costume makeup that is perfect for the laymen, and some even come with tutorials. Stitches on Frankenstein’s face can be done with eyeliner; bloody vampire lips with red lipstick, and green face paint can turn anyone into The Hulk.

Coupon mastery
If you or your child just has to have a store-bought costume, the best deal can usually be found online. Even if you’re making most of the costume, and buying essentials at the store, bargain shopping and couponing can help cut costs. CouponCodes4u.com offers deals for popular costume sites like Spirit Halloween Stores and general retailers like Wal-Mart and Kohl’s.

Homemade creativity
When you think of saving money on Halloween, you usually think of homemade costume options. At-home outfits can be just as, or more so, inventive than store-bought costumes, and don’t have to look cheap. A fortuneteller costume can be made from clothes and jewelry you already own by just piling on rich colors and metals. A beekeeper simply needs to wear all white, and add a bit of tool to a wide-brimmed hat. Bee appliques can add an air of reality as well. A pack of black feathers can turn any black outfit into a raven or even Black Swan.

Recycled ingenuity
For the sustainable Halloween-er, the thought of a plastic pre-made costume that will be used once is blasphemous. Recycled materials for costumes may take a little more elbow grease, but the impact on your carbon footprint will be worth it! A cardboard box and some aluminum foil can make a believable Wall-E costume, and a recycled umbrella cut in half makes frighteningly realistic bat wings.

Forethought originality
Just like at the end of any holiday, retailers deeply discount Halloween costumes after Oct. 31. So, if you think ahead, you and your kids can get amazing costumes for next year at the end of the current season. This strategy can also save you the stress and hassle of coming up with a costume at the last minute in 2013!
