COLUMBIA – Here is a very crude depth chart for the Gamecocks heading into Thursday night’s game with North Carolina.
OK, so earlier I had a brain fart and got my tight ends mixed up, at least about who is healthy and who is not. …totally my fault and inexcusable error on my part. Tight end Jarell Adams (ankle) returned to full practice Sunday night and is expected to play against UNC on Thursday night. Rory “Busta” Anderson (hamstring) is still out and is doubtful to play against the Tar Heels.
Offensively, nothing really jumps out at me on the depth chart. Bruce Ellington was limited in practice Sunday night, but Spurrier is still hopeful he can play Thursday.
Also, linebacker Cedric Cooper, who was the expected to start at will linebacker going into the preseason, is not expected to play with a dislocated elbow. Although he “did some running around” on Saturday at practice, Marcquis Roberts is slated to start at the will spot.
The other spot defensively that was up for grabs was at defensive tackle. T.J. Surratt has beaten out Gerald Dixon, Jr.
Kadetrix Marcus will start at strong safety. He was getting pushed by T.J. Gurley during camp.
Also, you’re new place kicker is Elliott Fry.
I’m not sure how this will look on the blog.
So, here goes.
South Carolina Depth Chart
Gerald Dixon, Jr.,
Spurrier feels pretty good about the three young linebackers – Kaiwan Lewis (mike), Marcquis Roberts (will) and Sharrod Golightly (spur).
He’s knows they are young and will make mistakes.
“Yeah, the young linebackers will probably make a few mistakes on where to be, and this, that and the other, hopefully not too much,” Spurrier said. “They’ll play fast and hard and they like playing. Kirk Botkin, I think, does a super job coaching those young guys, and they like playing football. That’s the fun part about coaching, really, all these freshmen who have come in. Hopefully two or three years from now, we’ll look back and say, that recruiting class of 2013 was a little bit better than everybody gave them credit for. Because these players seem to have a really good attitude and like to play and are very coachable.”
Spurrier took exception when someone asked him about recruiting Gaffney WR Quinshad Davis and losing him to UNC.
“We recruit a lot of guys that don’t recruit here,” Spurrier said. “We tried to recruit him, he decided to go to North Carolina, simple as that. We try to recruit a lot of guys that go to other places. Sometimes you get them here, sometimes you don’t.”
Mike Davis will get the start, but Spurrier said both Brandon Wilds and Shon Carson should get some carries as well.
“We certainly hope to give Mike a lot of runs, Brandon Wilds, also. Shon Carson could get a few.” Spurrier said. “We’ll see how it all works out. I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen Thursday night. I hope Connor Shaw plays extremely well. Dylan could play some in there early, could not play in there early, I don’t know how it’s going to work out.”
